Beware when choosing a web site developer

During the creation of this site there were many problems.  The developer took on the job and had minimal experience with the type of site that I needed created.  Almost every step of the way he had to ask other people for help.  This was a BIG problem for many reasons!  First, the main purpose of my site was for clients to be able to search and play music and then be able to download it.  I was left with a web site, in what he determined was the final state, that the music pages loaded way too slow.  Most music sites have pages that load in two to three seconds.  My pages were loading anywhere from 11 seconds to 30 seconds or more. The coding of the pages was the problem and he would not admit it. I asked some of the professionals the developer had used (including expression engine) and they all sent me emails stating that the pages were loading slowly because there was a problem with the way the code was written.  I was left with a site that was inefficient and not usable.  In fact it lost me a few clients.  Also, because he was unsure of how to do many of the functions needed for the site, it took 6 months instead of taking two months.

Beware when choosing a developer.  Make sure they are flexible and willing to make changes, creating a site is an organic type process, it grows and changes as you go.  Be clear of the objective.  Make sure you find someone who doesn’t talk down to you, someone who is willing to explain things in terms that you can understand.  In the world of web development some developers speak the language of the science of web creation and can not simplify, (and some choose not to simplify) that language for the lay man.  It is an abstract world full of many changing scenarios and your developer is your partner who needs to work with you and not against you.
